Austria to stop talks on Turkey’s joining EU

The Chancellor of Austria Christian Kern proposed to 'critically discuss' expediency of negotiations on Turkey's joining the EU with heads of the EU countries.

According to him, Turkey will not be able to become a member of the Union in the nearest future, and he intends to raise this issue at the meeting on 16 September.

As the Austrian ORF TV Channel reported, current talks are 'just a diplomatic fiction', the Chancellor believes.

Kern noted that there's been no progress in the course of these talks. He is sure that in reality Turkey 'has no real prospect of joining the EU'. The Chancellor offered to think of an 'alternative concept' for Turkey.

'We know that democratic standards in Turkey are not enough to claim membership,' the Austrian Chancellor added.

As Pravda.Ru reported, before that the British PM David Cameron supposed that Turkey would become a member of the EU in 1,000 years. Turkey applied in 1987. Decision on visa-free regime with Turkey was scuttled in May, as Ankara did not wish to implement 5 terms out of 72, which had been agreed upon.
