Attacking NATO member equals attacking entire alliance - Stoltenberg

NATO may resort to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty to respond to so-called hybrid attacks, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the Alliance stated.  In other words, an attack on any NATO member would be interpreted as an attack on the whole alliance.

According to Stoltenberg, hybrid threats to NATO are not associated with any particular country -  they come from different regions of the world.

As the NATO Secretary General said, the new concept for the fight against hybrid threats that NATO foreign ministers approved on Tuesday consisted of three components: preparation, deterrence and defense.

According to Stoltenberg, a hybrid warfare stipulates for a very wide range of threats, and NATO needs a wide range of opportunities to defend the alliance against those threats.

Speaking at the meeting of the NATO Council, Jens Stoltenberg explained the military buildup of the alliance in Syria and near its borders. The reason for the buildup is the deployment of the Russian S-400 air defense system. Russia deployed its highly effective ant i-aircraft system in Syria following the downing of the Russian Su-24 warplane by Turkish Air Force.
