The international forum of world news agencies "The Coalition for Peace" opened in the Iranian capital. More than 50 news agencies, including RIA Novosti, will discuss the role of mass media in the consolidation of efforts for establishing peace and preventing war and tension on the world arena.
The welcoming address of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, read by Iran's Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Masjed Jamei, says that "The Coalition for Peace" is not directed against any third country or power. The Coalition aims at uniting the efforts of all countries to implement the ideas of peace in the fight against terrorism and to prevent the escalation of tension and crises in the international community, the president pointed out.
"One of the main tasks in uniting efforts for peace and establishing a dialog between civilisations lies with mass media," Khatami emphasized.
Besides, leaders of news agencies, representatives from the UN, UNICEF and other international organizations are taking part in the forum.
