Pentagon sends troops to Sinai to defend peacekeepers

Pentagon sends 75 more military men to the Sinai peninsula in order to provide security of the peacekeeping contingent, Peter Cook, Pentagon spokesman claimed.

According to him, a light infantry platoon, surgical teams, as well as equipment and vehicles will be forwarded to the region.

"Our concern right now, our top priority, is the safety and security of those U.S. personnel there," Cook stated.

The peacekeepers have been based in Sinai since 1979. As Cook noted, the decision is not related to the recent attacks. The deployment of the American military had been planned a month before.

The Pentagon reported last week that four American soldiers and two peacekeepers assigned to the Multinational Force and Observer (MFO) were injured because of an explosion on the Sinai peninsula in Egypt.
