Danish Government Refuses to Ban Chechen Congress in Copenhagen

The government of Denmark has refused to ban the so-called World Congress of Chechens to open today in Copenhagen as had been demanded by the Foreign Ministry of Russia. Commenting on this during his interview with Berlingske Tidende, Danish Foreign Minister, Per Stig Meller said Copenhagen would not budge to Moscow's push and continued saying that 'We have no way of interfering with a privately called congress'.

As soon as Mr. Meller had received Moscow's protest note, he called a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policies to consider the situation. Every parliamentary faction supported Minister Meller in his decision to allow the Chechen congress to go ahead.
