U.S. intelligence keeps tabs on Internet users

The Director of the National Intelligence of the United States, James Clapper, does not deny that American intelligence agencies have access to servers of Internet companies to collect users' personal data, Reuters reported Friday.

Clapper thus confirmed the official statement from the White House, in which it was said that it goes about non-U.S. citizens living abroad. In turn, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Yahoo were quick to point out that they did not provide direct access to their servers for intelligence services.

The entire issue emerged after an article in The Washington Post, which alleged that U.S. intelligence agencies had direct access to the servers of nine major Internet giants, including Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Facebook, to keep tabs on private citizens as part of PRISM secret government program.
