Editor of Foreign Policy magazine Charles William Maynes dies

Charles William Maynes, editor of Foreign Policy magazine for 18 years and a former State Department official, has died at his suburban Washington home. He was 68.

From 1977 to 1980 Maynes was assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs in the administration of President Jimmy Carter. He became editor of Foreign Policy magazine, an influential foreign policy journal, and held the post until 1997.

"Of all the things he did, Foreign Policy was where his heart was," said Moises Naim, who succeeded him as editor. "He was lucid, forward-thinking and imaginative."

The magazine is published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a private think tank. At his death, Maynes, known as Bill, was president emeritus of the Eurasia Foundation, which helps former republics of the Soviet Union.

Maynes' death was reported by a Carnegie spokesman, Jeff Marn.
