HIV/AIDS charity gala raised more than 1.28 million US$

An extravagant AIDS charity gala held in Austria's capital Saturday night surpassed last year's record and raised more than Ђ1.1 million (US$1.4 million), Austrian media reported late Wednesday.

The 14th annual Life Ball was aimed at providing funding for people living with HIV/AIDS. Last year, the event brought in Ђ1.01 million (US$1.3 million), according to APA.

Organizers could not be reached for confirmation late Wednesday.

This year's event saw appearances by actress Sharon Stone, French film diva Catherine Deneuve and supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Half of the proceeds will go to Austrian HIV/AIDS projects and the other half will go to the nonprofit American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), Life Ball founder and organizer Gery Keszler said Saturday, reports AP.
