Hawaii Ironman race: germany's Al-Sultan wins

Germany's Faris Al-Sultan won the Ironman Triathlon World Championship on Saturday, finishing in an unofficial 8 hours, 14 minutes, 16 seconds the fourth-fastest time in race history.

"This is incredible. I don't believe it," Al-Sultan said.

The 27-year-old Al-Sultan, the third-place finisher last year who won the Arizona Ironman this year, passed Denmark's Torbjorn Sindballe early in the marathon run the third event and held the lead the rest of the way.

Cameron Brown of New Zealand was second in 8:19:33 in the competition that also featured a 2.4-mile (3.8-kilometer) swim and 112-mile (180-kilometer) bicycle ride. Three-time winner Peter Reid of Canada was third in 8:20:04, while Sindballe faded to finish 49th in 9:08:38.

Switzerland's Natascha Badmann won her sixth women's title, finishing in 9:09:30. Australia's Michellie Jones was second in 9:11:50.

Al-Sultan and Badmann each earned $110,000.
