ISS to Begin Monitoring Russia's Flood-Endangered Regions

On April 5th, the International Space Station will start monitoring Russian regions endangered with floods.

In focus will be the flood situation in the Krasnodar Territory, southern Russia, and the Maritime Territory in Russia's Far East, as well as spring floods on major Siberian rivers, a RIA Novosti correspondent was told at the Russian Mission Control Centre on Thursday.

The centre explained that flood monitoring from space stations was done within the framework of the Russian environment monitoring programme Uragan.

The Mission Control Centre also reported that with the beginning of snow melting, the special services furnish information to Rosaviakosmos (the Russian Space Agency) on the amount of snow in the territory of Russia, and forecast the flood situation in the regions.

According to the recent information, water levels continue to rise on rivers in southern Russia, a RIA Novosti correspondent was told by the Russian Hydrometeorological Committee.
