Russian Orthodox Church does not claim return of revolution-snatched property

The Russian Orthodox church does not claim return of all its property seized after the 1917 revolution. Metropolitan Sergius of Solnechnogorsk, household manager of the Moscow Patriarchate, said this at a press conference on Wednesday in a comment on versions appearing in the Russian press on the position of the Russian Orthodox church.

"It is clear that return of all property, including land, is impossible", said the metropolitan. If church had raised property-related questions, it would have done so in "a delicate manner after consultations with involved ministries and departments".

Metropolitan Sergius regrets how the mass media presents the matter of possibility of return of lands once owned by the church. He said that this manner may "produce a negative impression" of the position held by the Russian Orthodox church, which "would not like to take ownership of lands and then lease them".

"At the present stage, we are on the sidelines and the way the press presents the matter is simply inexpert," stressed the metropolitan.
