Russian Vets Come Out to Stem Spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease from Mongolia

Russian veterinarians take urgent actions to stem the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease from Russian areas bordering on Mongolia.

Massive vaccination of cattle is going on at present, a RIA Novosti correspondent was told at Russia's Agriculture Ministry. "Cattle is being driven away as far as possible" from infection sources.

After the outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease, the veterinary department of the Agriculture Ministry banned on July 24 the import to Russia, and transit across it territory, of living animals, all kinds of meat, fish, milk and products made out of them, as well as raw skins and hides and fodder from Mongolia. Simultaneously permits for the import/transit of the above listed goods, earlier issued for Russian firms, have been canceled.
