Russian schoolchildren win 6 gold medals at mathematics contest in Glasgow

Russian schoolchildren won six gold medals at the 43rd international mathematics contest in Glasgow.

The Chinese team also won six gold medals. However, the Chinese schoolchildren got 212 scores and won the first place, while Russians gained 204 scores. The US team (171 scores) took the third place.

All in all, 542 people from 87 countries of all the five continents (six participants from every country) took part in the 2002 international mathematics contest.

According to the supervisor of the Russian team, Nazar Agakhanov, Russian schoolchildren have been taking prize-winning places at the international mathematics contest since 1980. For instance, in 2001 the Russian team also took the second place, having won five gold medals. Traditionally, Chinese schoolchildren are main rivals of Russians.

The next international mathematics contest will be held in Tokyo on July 7-19, 2003.
