Jury chairman of XXIV Moscow Cinema Festival giving comments on its results

The chairman of the Moscow International Cinema Festival /MICF/, writer Chingiz Aitmatov shared his "thoughts after the final" on Monday at a press conference in RIA Novosti.

The writer said that the picture "Voskresenie" /"Resurrection"/ made by Italian film directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani that won the Grand Prix at a festival was something unique. "The fact that Italian filmmakers have filmed the great Russian classic Tolstoy's novel means a lot. Through the movie the Italians managed to express their original understanding of the book and tell us something important," he explained.

The main competitor of "Resurrection" at the festival was "Cuckoo", a picture by Russian film producer Alexander Rogozhkin. "In order to decide which picture will win the last session of the jury lasted six hours," said Aitmatov.

Rogozhkin received the title of the best film producer and a Finnish actor Ville Haansalo starring in it, won a prize for the best male part.

The prize for the best female part went to a Japanese actress Mikako Itikava, who played in "Azure". "This film was a little boring for me, however the female part of the jury insisted on this decision," Aitmatov said embarrassed.

One of the main ideas of "Azure" is an ability to keep one's emotions bottled up. "The tragedy of a schoolgirl's soul does not result in an emotional breakdown, which may serve as a lesson for young people," the chairman of the jury stressed.

Speaking about the Iranian picture "Call of the Earth" filmed by Vakhid Musayan that won a special prize, Chingiz Aitmatov stressed its originality. Despite its seeming "simplicity" the picture is "very didactic and demonstrative".

"We must do our best in order to give the Moscow festival further development, because the Russian cinema now has many interesting new names but does not have necessary conditions for the young talents' development," complained Chingiz Aitmatov at the end of the press conference.
