No Grounds For Russians To Fear Anthrax

There are no grounds to fear wide spread of anthrax in this country, believes Valentin Pokrovski, president of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Every year up to ten cases of anthrax are revealed in Russia, he said at a press conference in Moscow. Three cases have been registered this year. According to Professor Pokrovski, mostly people doing construction and earth-moving work and coming across burials of livestock which died of anthrax may become infected. Men cannot contract this disease from other men, recalled Valentin Pokrovski. The president of the Russian medical academy declared readiness of Russian scientists to present, if need be, a new anthrax vaccine to Western countries. This vaccine has been recently developed on the basis of new scientific approaches.
