Russian Navigation Satellite Group To Reach Level Of 12 Vehicles

The Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) will be increased by 33% in 2002. This information was disclosed on Thursday by Risaviakosmos officials. There are currently 9 satellites included into the GLONASS system on the orbit, three more space vehicles are planned to be launched, the sources added. The GLONASS system allows to exactly determine the location of various objects on the land, in the sea, atmosphere and space. This capability facilitates accomplishing many tasks. In particular, this system allows to enhance sea and river navigation, set civilian aviation routes, of exploration expeditions, sites for constructing oil pipelines and conduct space environmental monitoring of the Earth's surface, etc. This system is also used by the Russian Defence Ministry, Rosaviakosmos officials reported.
