Russian FSB preparing documents for extraditing businessman Mikhail Zhivilo from France

The Novosibirsk department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) is preparing documents necessary for extraditing Russian businessman Mikhail Zhivilo from France. According to the investigation, in 2000 he ordered the attempted assassination of Aman Tuleyev, governor of the neighbouring Kemerovo region.

Mikhail Zhivilo was put on an international wanted list in the autumn 2000 and in February 2001 he was detained in Paris by the local police. Yet the Paris appellate court refused to extradite the businessman, ruling that the Russian investigators did not have enough evidence to prove his involvement in the crime, and Zhivilo was set free.

The investigators started to prepare documents for another application on Zhivilo's extradition after last week the Novosibirsk regional court had announced its verdict to Viktor Tikhonov, one of the organizers of the assassination. During the trial the police acquired new evidence of Zhivilo's involvement, as RIA Novosti learned from a source close to the investigation.
