Eunuchs party in Bhopal

India’s eunuchs have come together for a three-day party in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. More than 2,500 eunuchs will gather to eat, drink and be merry in commemoration of their spiritual leader, Haji Rahamatullah.

India’s hundreds of thousands of eunuchs are called the “hijras” or “third sex”. Originally, eunuchs were castrated and placed in charge of harems. In modern times, some hijra cut off their own testicles, dress as women and live together in communities, terrorising the neighbouring communities through violent acts of robbery, or can be captured and castrated by other “hijra”.

In India, they are believed to have special powers.
