Misunderstanding As Main Reason Of Suicide

According to rueful statistics someone in the U.S. dies by suicide every 16 minutes. This year the Walk was organized in Omaha.

The Out of the Darkness Community and Overnight walks benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by raising awareness on suicide and depression, raising money for research and education to prevent suicide from taking place, and providing assistance and a safe outlet for survivors of suicide.

Suicide claims more than 32,000 lives each year, but organizers of a local suicide awareness walk say every one of those is preventable. Actually ninety percent of those who die by suicide could have benefited from mental assistance.

More than 1,000 people affected by suicide turned out to raise awareness Sunday at Miller's Landing along the waterfront in downtown Omaha, U.S.

"There are a hundred stories here," says one of the organizers, Joyce Hicks.

As the chair of the Nebraska chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Hicks knows well how suicide can affect families.   She lost her own brother to it more than five years ago.

The Community Walks are typically 5k (3.10 miles).

This was the 5th year of the Out of the Darkness Community Walk. The group saw it's biggest crowd yet, according to KPTM.news' report.
