Berlin Philharmonic’s tour – three weeks of concerts in Asia

The Berlin Philharmonic on Wednesday launched a three-week tour of Asia in an attempt to strengthen its presence in the region, particularly China, which it last visited in 1979. The orchestra will play two concerts at each of its stops in Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei and Tokyo, performing works by Ludwig von Beethoven, Richard Strauss, Thomas Adиs, Franz Josef Haydn, Hector Berlioz and Maurice Ravel.

"We hope (this program) will demonstrate the range and capability of this outstanding orchestra, and we are especially excited for this visit," said Conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

The orchestra will be accompanied on the tour by a camera team from Boomtown Media, which will be collecting footage of the trip for a future documentary film. In 2004, the Berlin-based production company released "Rhythm Is It!" a film documenting an educational outreach project in which Rattle and the orchestra introduced 250 children from Berlin inner-city schools to Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring."
