Restored 16th century Orthodox Church in Novgorod region to be consecrated

The restored Orthodox church of the 16th century will be consecrated on Friday in the Novgorod region (Central Russia).

The ceremony of consecrating the revived St Varlaam church will take place in the Transfiguration Convent, RIA Novosti was told in Novgorod diocese department.

It is expected that the church will be consecrated by Archbishop Lev of Novgorod and Staraya Russa.

According to the data of the diocesan department, the St Varlaam church in the nunnery was built in 1552.

In the years of the Second World War the church was almost fully destroyed. In the postwar time its ground floor was partially restored.

The comprehensive restoration of the church started some two and a half years ago.

The Transfiguration Convent is not only one of the biggest in Russia but also one of the most beautiful monuments of ancient Russian architecture.
