Photoexposition "This is New York: Pictures Taken by People" opened in Moscow

Photo exhibition "This is New York: Pictures Taken by People", opened in Moscow on Monday under the auspices of Russian Ministry of Culture and Academy of Arts, commemorates the victims of 9/11, 2001 tragedy.

The exhibition is organised by the Russian Ministry of Culture State Centre of Museums and Exhibitions with cooperation of American Embassy in Russian Federation.

The exhibition consists of 500 pictures of most various levels - from highly artistic down to amateur snapshots, but they were all taken on the very day New York was under a terrorist attack.

The word "people" in the project's title should be interpreted literally: the pictures were collected by the people who responded to the curators' initiative, who brought their photos or sent them via Internet. There is more than 50 000 images in that archive.

The "People's" exhibition turned out to be the most touching and emotionally powerful.

Among the images' authors are both famous photographers and people of various professions: previously, the camera was just a means of capturing the events from their own lives.

The unusual exposition, where the absence of picture frames and an improvised hanging of computer print-outs emphases democratic nature of the project, will be located at Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
