Hidden canine reactions exposed: Scanning reveals how dogs process human facial distress

Dogs can distinguish between different negative human emotions by activating specific neural patterns in the brain, according to a study conducted by researchers from Hungary, Austria, and Mexico. The team recorded distinct neuronal activity when dogs viewed photographs of sad, angry, and fearful faces. The findings were published in the journal iScience.

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to gather data. The study involved dogs of various breeds, though border collies made up the majority of the sample. To avoid the influence of personal attachment to owners, the animals were shown photographs of unfamiliar people with diverse facial expressions. All dogs participated voluntarily and remained in the scanner without physical restraint.

Neural Response to Positive and Negative Emotions

Initial findings showed that happy faces triggered the strongest BOLD signal—a measure of blood oxygen levels—in the right temporal cortex. To determine if this region responded exclusively to happiness or to emotions in general, the authors applied machine learning.

The algorithm successfully differentiated brain activity patterns associated with happy faces from those tied to sadness, fear, or anger. However, the same brain regions did not allow the classifier to distinguish between the various types of negative emotions, as they appeared identical in that specific area.

To identify differences among negative states, the researchers analyzed activity across the entire brain. This analysis revealed specific regional specializations:

  • The right rostral suprasylvian gyrus helped distinguish sadness from fear.
  • The right middle ectosylvian and left splenial gyri allowed the separation of anger and fear.

Andrey Voroshilov, biologist: such brain selectivity may be linked to the fact that fear has a particular behavioral significance for dogs or triggers stronger arousal compared to sadness or anger.

Study Limitations

The authors identified several boundaries to their results. The sample size was small, consisting of 8 to 12 dogs, and the predominance of border collies prevents generalizing these findings to all domestic dog breeds. Additionally, the animals were exposed to static images, whereas in real-world scenarios, dogs interpret emotions through a combination of facial mimicry, voice, and gestures.

While the work confirms that the canine brain differentiates certain negative human states—particularly fear—the researchers state that further studies with larger breed samples and dynamic stimuli are required to reach a final conclusion on the ability of dogs to distinguish all types of human emotions.
