The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved mFlusiva, the first messenger RNA (mRNA) influenza vaccine developed by Moderna. The drug is indicated for adults aged 50 and older.
The regulator applied two different approval pathways: adults aged 50 to 64 received standard approval, while those aged 65 and older were granted accelerated approval. This distinction addresses the need for more effective options for older adults, who often exhibit a diminished immune response to traditional vaccines.
Unlike conventional vaccines that use inactivated or weakened viruses, mRNA technology delivers genetic instructions to cells. These instructions prompt the body to produce a specific viral protein, which the immune system recognizes as foreign and develops a defense against.
Approval was based on clinical trials confirming the vaccine's safety profile and its ability to trigger a significant immune response. The synthetic nature of mRNA production removes the need for chicken embryos used in traditional manufacturing, which potentially shortens the production cycle and allows for faster adaptation to mutating seasonal strains.
According to physician and evidence-based prevention specialist Anna Kuznetsova, this approach may offer more reliable protection against severe influenza complications for patients over 50 experiencing immune senescence (the natural aging of the immune system).
Older adults frequently experience limited efficacy from traditional flu shots, leading to higher hospitalization rates during epidemics. The shift toward biotechnology may alter prevention strategies for influenza and other respiratory infections. Researchers are currently evaluating mRNA applications for respiratory diseases where standard preventive methods remain insufficient.
