Russia is one of Moldova's main markets, and wine is one of the most important exports in this largely agricultural country, accounting for about 30 percent of Moldova's gross domestic product. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe.

On March 27, Russia banned wine imports from Moldova and Georgia saying it needed to protect consumers from poor quality wine. Before the ban, Moldova sold 80 percent of its wine to Russia, the AP reports.
