Russian security services discovered a bomb in the southern region of Ingushetia, and said Monday that they had prevented a serious attack on Russian military personnel. The homemade bomb, equivalent in force to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of TNT, was found in a cache Sunday in a joint operation by the Federal Security Service, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, and the Prosecutor-General's office, said security service press officer Roman Mezentsev.
Neither he nor the prosecutor's office revealed where the bomb had been discovered or any other details of the foiled attack.
Ingushetia, which lies west of the war-battered region of Chechnya, has been rocked by attacks by rebels and criminal groups, many of them targeting the large Russian military contingent based there.
