A Russian nuclear submarine carried out a test launch of a ballistic missile in the Barents Sea during naval maneuvers overseen by President Vladimir Putin.
The missile was launched from the Yekaterinburg submarine toward a target range on Russia's Far East peninsula of Kamchatka, the Interfax and RIA-Novosti news agencies reported, citing naval officials.
In February 2004, a technical glitch thwarted the launch of Russian ballistic missiles in the Barents Sea on two consecutive days, in an embarrassment for Putin who witnessed one failed launch as he watched the exercises aboard a nuclear submarine, the AP reported.
