Registration of presidential candidates begins in Chechnya

Registration of presidential candidates has begun in Chechnya, Buvai-Sari Arsakhanov, deputy chairman of the republic's electoral committee, said Monday in an interview on Ekho Moskvy radio.

The registration will continue through July 14, and those who have not yet notified the committee about their plans to run, have until July 9 to do so, Mr. Arsakhanov said. Seven candidates have submitted such a notification by now: Marat Zainalabirov, a doctor from Rostov-on-Don, in the neighboring Rostov region; Alexandra Malyshkina, an assistant to a member of the State Duma, or Russia's lower house of parliament; surgeon Sultan Aiskhanov; Adam Edilov, a lawyer based in the Chechen capital, Grozny; Moscow-based businessman Malik Saidulayev; Mariat Garchkhanova, a native of the Chechen city of Urus Martan; Vakhit Visayev, from Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt, and Magomet Aidamirov.

The next presidential polls in Chechnya are scheduled for August 29. The decision to call the election was made following the assassination of President Akhmad Kadyrov at the Dinamo stadium in Grozny on May 9.
