New Russian national security plan

The Russian Security Council should map out a plan of action to protect national security in view of the new members joining in the North Atlantic Alliance, believes Gennadi Gudkov of the State Duma security committee.

The deputy of the lower parliamentary chamber said this on Thursday on results of the joint sitting of the three involved Duma committees on the adoption of seven countries in NATO on April 2.

"We should not neglect that fact that very soon these countries will house ten NATO air defence posts. This will lead to the 300 to 450 kilometers of the territory of Russia being observable from above. According to some estimates of the general headquarters, it is up to 1,600 kilometers, when the Moscow region gets in focus", Gudkov said.

"In a sense, we will face a situation when our national security is impinged", he added.

Russian parliamentarians "are merely duty-bound to declares their position", he said.

Also, the State Duma should demand sped-up adaptation of the treaty on the conventional forces in Europe, Gudkov believes. He recalled that three out of the seven states entering NATO have not ratified the treaty.
