Inter-Parliamentary Assembly opens in St. Petersburg

An international parliamentary conference on European-wide co-operation opened on Tuesday in St. Petersburg's Tavrichesky Palace.

The organisers of the conference are the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of CIS member-nations, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. While addressing the conference, Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov said that they had agreed that the meeting would focus on issues guaranteeing the legal formation of a single economic space between the European Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Apart from CIS parliamentarians, delegations from the European parliament, PACE, the Northern Council and other parliamentary organisations are also taking part in the event.

A Declaration will be adopted at the end of the conference that will reflect the willingness of the parliamentarians to work together on a European-wide home.
