Russia-EU summit opens on second day of st. Petersburg international events

The Russia -- European Union summit opened on the second day of international events in St. Petersburg.

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation, Prime Minister Konstandinos Simitis of Greece and President Romano Prodi of the European Commission are to answer reporters' questions, after this summit winds up.

The leaders of other countries are to arrive at the Konstantin Palace, while the Russia-EU summit is still in full swing, attending the official opening ceremony of that palace.

After that, the heads of state and their wives will leave for the Catherine Palace, with the President of Russia and Germany's Chancellor opening the Amber Room in an impressive setting there. An excursion for all heads of state will then be organized at the Amber Room.

The distinguished guests would then be expected to visit the Hermitage, i.e. an exhibition entitled "Peter The Great, The Founder of St. Petersburg".

Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the Neva festival, after visiting the exhibition.

The heads of state will subsequently leave for the Peterhof State Palace and Park Ensemble. A festive banquet will be organized for them at the Peterhof on behalf of Vladimir Putin. A fountain show will also take place there to the sounds of music.

President George Bush Jr. of the United States will join all other leaders at Peterhof.

An evening coffee party will be organized for the heads of state at the Monplaisir palace, after the second day of international events comes to an end.
