Russian winner of Boston marathon becomes lieutenant

Sportswoman Svetlana Zakharova from Chuvashia, the Volga region, who won the Boston marathon this year, has been awarded the rank of lieutenant by Russian Emergency Minister Sergei Shoigu's decree.

Zakharova has served in the Ministry's Chuvashia fire department since last year, RIA Novosti learned at the Chuvashia state emergency committee.

In Boston Zakharova was the first to finish the race with a time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 20 seconds, improving her previous achievement by almost 4 minutes: in December 2002 she won the traditional marathon in Honolulu with the result of 2 hours 29 minutes and 8 seconds. She is also the Russian national record holder with a time of 2 hours 21 minutes 31 seconds shown in October last year at the Chicago marathon.

At present Zakharova is preparing for the world championship in Paris that starts in August.
