State Officials Commit 284,000 Civil Rights Violations in Russia in 2002

In 2002 the Russian prosecutor's office uncovered more than 284,000 instances of violations of citizens' rights committed by official figures. According to Rosbalt's correspondent, this was announced yesterday at a press conference on 'Human rights and their defence by the state in contemporary Russia' by Vladimir Radchenko, the first deputy chairman of the Russian Supreme Court. Radchenko said that this figure was almost 37% higher than in 2001.

Radchenko also said that 28,000 officials were held accountable or subjected to disciplinary measures last year, and about 1,500 criminal cases were launched as a result of rights violations, which was an increase of almost a third on the previous year. He also highlighted the fact that around 36,000 warnings against violating the law were issued to official figures in 2002.
