Gazprom to Cut Industrial Atmospheric Emissions by One Third, by 2012

The Gazprom gas company, Russia's largest, intends to cut its industrial atmospheric emissions causing greenhouse effect by one third, by the year 2012. This is according to what Alexander Solovyanov, Gazprom's head of the Department of Environmental Protection and Energy Saving, said at 4th International conference on energy saving entitled 'Russia's Participation in the Global Market Mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol'. Mr. Solovyanov further said that, in 2002, Gazprom's emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere had amounted to 232 million tonnes. He added that, according to expert estimates, the use of new technologies will allow cutting the figure by 86 million tonnes over the following 10 years, which Alexander Solovyanov believes to be 'a considerable achievement'.
