Census in Chechnya to be conducted within one day for security reasons

The All-Russian population census will be held in Chechnya on the same dates as in the rest of the country, but for security reasons people conducting it will be working for one day only, said minister for Chechen affairs Vladimir Yelagin at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Besides counting the republic's residents, the census will define the number of unemployed and help to adjust social issues connected with pension and subsidy pay-outs, he said.

According to some estimations, the population in Chechnya amounts to 800,000 people, 150,000 out of which are unemployed, the minister pointed out. 50,000 receive unemployment benefits, the rest are undergoing proper registration. Meanwhile "there are structures interested in increasing the number of pensioners and unemployed in order to manipulate the payments", Yelagin stressed.

When speaking on the safety of the census, the minister said that it would be provided by the interior ministry and troops, while the number of people conducting census would be several times higher compared with the average figure in Russia. Yet he is afraid that "in some mountainous districts, where the presence of federal forces is minimal, it will be difficult".
