RWE To Push Energy Saving Measures In Sofia

RWE, Germany's second largest utility grouping, said yesterday that it will upgrade the energy system in the public buildings of Bulgaria's capital in the coming years, as part of the city's drive to lower energy costs.

The measures include improving isolation at about 330 public buildings like schools and hospitals in the city of Sofia as well as modernizing local energy distribution systems, RWE said in an emailed statement. The order will be completed in the next seven years, RWE said.

The project is the biggest of its kind so far in Bulgaria and will help lower energy use by a third, the German utility said. The buildings awaiting an upgrade currently use more than three times the standard energy consumption in Europe, RWE said.

The order will be executed by Kompania za Energospestiavane, in which RWE's maintenance unit RWE Solutions and German municipal utility Stadtwerke Leipzig hold stakes, RWE said.
