Deadly Sahara

The Sahara desert has again claimed lives after a sandstorm caused five people to lose their way and die of thirst.

Every year there are sandstorms around the summer time in the Sahara desert, covering all tracks and signs. Those who venture forth unprepared are playing with death, as five travellers found to their cost. Their vehicle was found 250 kilometres south of Tamanrasset and the bodies, a few metres from the vehicle.

All had died of thirst and sunstroke, according to the Algerian police. Travellers in the Sahara are warned to register with the local police, to carry reliable communications equipment and to stock up on water.
