Argentina: Everybody out !

Peronist Governors backed Wednesday President Duhalde on his project to bring presidential elections forward by six months and expressed their support to remove all elective positions and replace them on March 2003. Therefore, the ruling party now accepts what has been a strong popular demand: the whole political class must revalidate their mandates in democratic elections.

However, Government admits this is something which technically needs a constitutional reform and there is no enough time for doing so. Consequently, the only way for this decision to become reality is a massive resignation of politicians in the Parliament, Provinces and less ranked posts. President Duhalde is at the head of this process, by anticipating the end of his Presidency.

“The early elections called by the National Government reflect wishes of the majority of the Argentine people”, major Peronist officials expressed in a statement. The President added that it is up to the congress and provincial Governments to decide on that.

Peace, Bread and Work !

At the same time the Peronist summit was being conducted in the Olivos’ Presidential residency, in Buenos Aires a massive pacific demonstration against police brutality took place. Under a heavy rain, thousands of demonstrators honoured victims of last week police massacre in an emotive act.

A week after those events, the largest independent umbrella union Argentine Workers Congress (CTA), together with human rights groups, left wing parties and people in general joined in Plaza de Mayo, the main city square, claiming for justice and changes in government’s economic plan. Similar, marches went on in major country cities and no incidents were reported anywhere.
