Competition between Ports of Russia and Baltic States Reaches Highpoint

The competitive war between the ports of Russia and the Baltic States has reached a highpoint. This was announced on Friday at a conference in St. Petersburg entitled "Transit and Perspectives of Development for Baltic States Ports" by Yury Ivanov, Deputy General Director of the Central Research Institute of the Sea Fleet. He said that 'the main problem is that for many Russian goods transporters, it is economically more viable to use the ports of the Baltic States. Their own economic interests in this case conflict with the interests of state and society.'

He went on to say that 'It is not only a question of tax rates, but also of the presence of facilities, as well as so-called port and customs "requisitions". Goods transporters clearly prefer to do business with the Baltic States and with Finland.'
