Russia intends to press for free transit for Kaliningrad region

On June 19th the State Duma (the lower chamber of the Russian parliament) will consider the draft resolution on the situation with the Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave in the Baltic, in the context of the EU expansion, said chairman of the Duma's international committee Dmitry Rogozin.

The prepared document expresses the position of the Russian leaders, that are against introducing visas for Russian citizens for trips from the Kaliningrad region to the main part of Russia and back, he said.

Russia must obtain free transit for the region, Rogozin stressed.

"The free transit to the Kaliningrad region and back is beyond the discussion with the EU," he said, adding that "we will refuse to discuss the matter as technical." Russia "has no objections to the EU expansion," but "it should not expand at the expense of Russia," Rogozin believes.

This is "a question of Russia's sovereignty, that is of national security basis," he pointed out.

"There will be no compromises with sealing the carriages with Russian citizens going to Kaliningrad and back," he stated.
