Australia: the Chinese embassy speaks up

The Chinese Embassy in Canberra issued a statement today rebuking Prime Minister John Howard for his recent statement related to Taiwan. Mr. Howard said in an interview that he supports the American policy of defending Taiwan against a possible Chinese aggression. The spokeswoman for the Embassy called the remarks 'unnecessary' and 'unhelpful'. Until now, Australia maintained an official support for 'one China policy' while at the same time developing economic ties with Taiwan.
