Sakhalin Takes Actions Due To Coming Flood

Urgent actions are being taken in Sakhalin (Far East of Russia) due to coming flood caused by strong snow melting in mountains and valleys. According to the administration of the Sakhalin region, the weather forecasters' data shows that the last winter was the snowiest one for the last half a century. In some mountainous areas and in the island's south, the precipitations have exceeded the average norm by 2-3 times. The imminent danger of flooding is in the island's south. To-date, 17 private houses have already been partially flooded in the outskirts of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. However, so far people do not abandon their homes. According to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk's administration, basements of 140 apartment houses have been flooded. Only in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, 100 men and more than 20 items of equipment have been engaged to fight the natural calamity. The detachments of the Ministry of Emergencies have been struggling against the ice obstructions in the rivers of the island's central and northern areas, and, to these ends, they have already effected more than a thousand blasts.
