Action is underway in southern Kyrgyzstan to demand the annulment of the results of Sunday's presidential election, won by incumbent Askar Akayev, a senior official said on Wednesday. About 600 people have been holding rallies over the past three days in Bazar-Kurgan district of Dzhalal-Abad region, demanding a new election, Dzhalal-Abad election commission chief Nurmamat Ashimov has said. The protesters, all of whom are supporters of former candidate Omurbek Tekebayev, are making no specific demands on the regional commission, Ashimov said at a meeting of Kyrgyzstan's Central Election Commission, AK&M announces. The regional administration is holding talks with demonstrators, who are blocking off the arterial Bishkek-Osh motor road linking the country's northern and southern regions, he said.
