The Russia’s State Duma turned down the initiative of the vice-speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky about the possibility of establishment of polygamous families. Only 21 deputes voted for it, 271 voted against and 2 abstained from voting. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia suggested legalising polygamous families in Russia: one man and several - up to four - women. According to Zhirinovsky, it would help to settle demographic problems, as well as social ones. But Alexander Barannikov, the head of the committee for the affairs of family, women and youth said that the draft law opposes the Constitution of Russia because the author proposes to abolish affiliation if a child is born out of wedlock. Thus only a woman becomes responsible for the birth and upbringing of a child. In Barannikov’s opinion, it breaks her rights.
