Nigeria: government prohibits Sharia

The Nigerian government has issued a law banning the application of the Sharia, a measure which will save the life of Saffiya Hussaini, sentenced to death by stoning by an Islamic court.

The decree makes the practice of the Sharia illegal, using the principle that Moslems should be treated in the same manner as all other citizens if they commit the same crimes. In this case, the “crime” in question is that Saffiya Hussaini had become pregnant after having relations with her ex-husband.

The Sharia has been applied vigorously in the eleven Islamic states of Nigeria. The measure came after intense pressure was applied on the Nigerian government by diplomatic circles and foreign pressure groups.
