Technologies Developed For Kursk's Raising May Be Applied To Lifting Sunken Ships In General

The technologies first used in raising the Kursk nuclear submarine may become universal and be used for lifting sunken ships, Academician Igor Spassky, general designer of the Rubin central design bureau that made blueprints for the submarine, said on Wednesday, according to this correspondent. According to him, "it was the first time that strands combined with jacks and compensators had been used on such a scale and confirmed their reliability. Perhaps such a system will become universal for ship lifting". He also pointed to the unique design of grippers used in the hoisting operation developed by Russian and Dutch specialists. The academician also said that the technologies used to cut the hull of the crippled submarine will find application in developing offshore oil and gas deposits.
