Russian Constitutional Court Chairman Urges To Uphold Human Rights In Anti-Terror Campaign

Chairman Marat Baglai of Russia's Constitutional Court believes that the problem of human rights protection should be particularly addressed now that the international fight against terrorism has been intensified. Baglai said as much, opening the international conference "Constitutional Justice on the Turn of the Centuries", which gathered representatives of 30 countries worldwide. Naturally, terrorists should not enjoy such recognised rights and freedoms as the choice of the place to live in, freedom of movement, privacy of life and correspondence. However, it would be tragically unjust to weaken these achievements in the wide scope, Baglai argued. He noted that many countries were presently calling for tightening the anti-terror legislation. I hope the fight against terrorism will not amount to clashes between civilisations, ethnic groups, and religions, but will be within the framework of the recognised norms of law," stressed the chairman of the constitutional court.
