Right wing victory on Nicaraguan presidential elections

The candidate of the ruling Liberal Party has been proclaimed new President of Nicaragua, after Sandinist candidate, Daniel Ortega, acknowledged his defeat, Infosic reports. According to official information, Enrique Bolanos, future president of the country, obtained around 54 percent of votes, against the 45 percent of the leftist Frente Sandinista.

Ortega, who lost three consecutive elections, is a former guerrilla commander and took the Sandinism to power between 1979 and 1990, after overthrowing the militarist government of Anastasio Somoza, who had ruled the country for 43 years. The US government had expressed during last week its opposition to an eventual return of Ortega to power, as CIA combated the Sandinist regime during the eighties and consider the candidate a political enemy of the United States of America.
