Australia: Hurricane in Sidney

Hurricane-type winds above 160 kph hit Sydney today, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Thousands of houses are without electric power, traffic lights went out of service and the debris made driving difficult in many parts of town. Rescue service assited a woman and her child trapped in a car when a large tree fell on the vehicle. A hospital was evacuated in Horsby, north of Sydney, when it lost its roof. Large trees, uprooted by the wind, continue blocking traffic in many suburbs. A commuter train was hit by a falling tree, but no injuries were recorded. Sydney's train system - an essential service for most residents - continues experiencing substantial delays. The Fire Brigade and State Emergency Service are expected to work around the clock to repair damages.
