Interaction between Russia and Greece in the energy sphere can "become one side of cooperation between Russia and the European Union", said Russian President Vladimir Putin at a press conference arranged jointly with the prime minister of Greece. If the projects outlined in this sphere materialize, this will not only bring stability to energy supply in Greece but also make it "a more attractive partner" for international cooperation, said the Russian president. Vladimir Putin stressed that join bilateral and multilateral projects in the energy sphere are not limited only by supplies of Russian hydrocarbons. In this connection, the Russian head of state noted long-term plans for building an underground gas reservoir in Greece. Upon completion of this project Greece "can become an important element of the European energy system", observed Putin. He also spoke of plans of building an additional pipeline in Greece, Russia's participation in building gas-distribution networks on the territory of Greece, as well as the opportunity of laying a new oil pipeline and the participation of Russian companies in new projects in the field of electricity generation.
